Lyrics
I envision the lyrics of Runkajoels songs having the following components.
- Good songwriting techniques used - Use general principles found specifically in Jai Josephs books. Create a story with some interest. Word choice, melody and music work together to create feeling and convey a consistent message. Word choice is careful and deliberate taking into account sound, rhythm and structure.
- Avoid cliché - I do NOT desire to create songs that contain lyrics or concepts that have been heard in 100s of other songs gone by. If we are going to do a man loves woman love song, it better have a twist or new analogies to make it interesting and different.
- Honesty - I desire honesty on life and interactions. I'd like to embrace "the ugliness" of life and find beauty and truth in it as well. There is truth in cleaning up puke from your child from the floor. There is truth in death. There is truth in war and torture and how that ties to upbringing and even one's view of God (or lack of one). I seek to use the full range of the English language (or any other for that matter). I'm a South Park fan for example. I'm not much into pomp and circumstance. I'm a fan of Eminem for this reason. Billy Joel also struck me as honest and comfortable with his humanity. I'm sure there are many other examples out there.
- Cleverness - Cleverness is a great way to add color to lyrics and make them memorable. It can set a band out of from the rest.
- Message - SHORT VERSION. The purpose of the lyric message is to raise the conciousness of the world through invited introspection. At the same time, the song as a whole is fun and entertaining just by itself. It's bridgebuilding music to a higher state of conciousness.
If you want the longer version, read the Philosophy section. Note that I want to explore the lyrics of the music using both familiar and more advanced language. How many times have kids just sung along to the words to some song that's talking about something pretty negative without even knowing what they are saying? It works both ways. People absorb this stuff, so why not have them absorb something that promotes effective thinking.
